Syabas, Malaysia! I’ve never been prouder to call myself a Malaysian than I am today. This is a win for the people of Malaysia more than anything else.

Like so many others, my heart wished for this result, but my head said the deep-seated fears and mutual suspicions nurtured by the Barisan Nasional and its predecessor would once again create second thoughts among most voters on the journey between their homes and the polling booths.

Oh, how sweet it is to be proven wrong! How sweet to show the world that we as a people have a backbone and we have a real democracy.

This is also a win above all else for Anwar Ibrahim. The journey from being a beaten - literally and figuratively - wheelchair-bound figure to becoming the de facto leader of this group of gutsy people who have shaken the previously unshakable BN machine to the core is nothing short of remarkable, the stuff legends are made off.

As some would say, the man can take a licking - but he keeps on ticking!

It was Anwar’s clarion call of reformasi, defiantly and in the face of a dictator who would stoop to anything to retain power, in the 1990s that triggered everything that has eventually resulted in this triumph. Anwar irrelevant? The BN folk should practice their stand-up comedy skills!

Kudos too to Lim Kit Siang and his merry band of DAP-per brothers and sisters. Kit - who should have been made a Tun a long time ago - has toiled on the thankless opposition bench for decades. A lesser man would have packed it in a long time ago, but his fire burns as bright as ever.

There’s just one more reward left for Kit - to see him as a member of the cabinet. That looks like a real possibility on this historic day, though he’ll have to hang around until the next election for that to happen. Heck, after 30 or so years, what’s another four or five?

A shout out too to other opposition stalwarts such as Karpal Singh and Tan Seng Giaw, Kit’s equally determined and long-suffering brothers-in-arms.

A word too for PAS. They kept their end of the bargain - trouncing the BN in Kelantan and put up a strong fight in Terengganu - as well as leading the charge and winning in Kedah, and denying the BN valuable seats elsewhere in the country.

But most of all, this one is for the scores of thousands who took to the streets for Bersih and Hindraf. They showed that there is really no reason to fear anything. They led the way in this brave attempt by Malaysians to take back their country.

When a massive structure has been in place for decades, it cannot - and frankly should not - be brought down in one attempt. The nuts and bolts holding things in place are deeply embedded, and the first order of business is to remove the outer shell first.

The BN’s outer shell has been removed. Now, the opposition parties have to start working on infiltrating the core. And if you really examine today’s results, the BN core may not be too formidable at all.

More than 50 of the BN’s 135-odd seats came from East Malaysia. In fact, these are the seats that the ruling coalition relied on to retain power. The opposition parties must now focus their efforts on making major inroads into Sabah and Sarawak.

In West Malaysia, it is Johor and Pahang that have provided the firewall for the BN. And these are the states the opposition needs to start working on earnestly. Take away these four big states in East and West Malaysia, and suddenly the BN is a pretty spent force.

But the opposition parties too need to be careful and deliberate in the way they move forward. This win will mean nothing four years down the road if they don’t do things carefully.

One of the most important things to remember will be that the foundation of this nation remains the Malays and Malay culture. As go the Malays, so goes the nation. It is important that this fact is remembered and always kept in mind when the three opposition parties negotiate their way forward from here.

It is particularly important that the DAP should reassure the Malays that they are not just a Chinese party at heart. And it is not just words that will do the trick. Deeds are important.

The state that all eyes will be on is probably going to be Perak. Kedah and Kelantan will naturally have Malay first ministers, while Penang naturally lends itself to a Chinese No 1. But Perak is a trickier proposition, and it would be advisable for the DAP, despite winning the most state seats, to make way for a Malay menteri besar, preferably from the PAS or PKR.

Also tricky, if only for symbolic reasons, is the post of opposition leader. Since PKR won the largest number of seats, they have a claim to appoint the opposition leader. But here again, magnanimity and the spirit of ‘Malaysianess’, I suggest that the PKR should step aside and support Kit to continue as the opposition leader. Any other choice will come across as being distasteful and lacking class.

Finally, a word for Umno. It would be foolish to write them off as a spent force. They’ll still be running this country, and if they are smart enough, they’ll retool, haul themselves into the 21st  century and remain a potent force.

If the EC uses it, partly to be sure that there will be no ‘penipuan’ in the GE.

But now, it seems that the EC has said NO for it, so be dumb with it. Haji Hadi should fight for it once again (although it sounds unworkable).

The reason was simple; “public order and security issues”, but I think it’s nonsense as I have read in H newspaper that ‘there’s been some Burma families seen in Pekan’.

MALAYSIA’S been at it again, arguing about what proportion of the economy each of its two main races — the Malays and the Chinese — owns. It’s an argument that’s been running for 40 years. That wealth and race are not synonymous is important for national cohesion, but really it’s time Malaysia grew up.

It’s a tough world out there and there can be little sympathy for a country that prefers to argue about how to divide wealth rather than get on with the job of creating it.

The long-held aim is for 30 per cent of corporate equity to be in Malay hands, but the figure that the Government uses to justify handing over huge swathes of public companies to Malays but not to other races is absurd. It bases its figure on equity valued, not at market value, but at par value.

Many shares have a par value of say $1 but a market value of $12. And so the Government figure (18.9 per cent is the most recent figure) is a gross underestimate. Last month a paper by a researcher at a local think-tank came up with a figure of 45 per cent based on actual stock prices. All hell broke loose. The paper was withdrawn and the researcher resigned in protest. Part of the problem is that he is Chinese.

"Malaysia boleh!" is Malaysia’s national catch cry. It translates to "Malaysia can!" and Malaysia certainly can. Few countries are as good at wasting money. It is richly endowed with natural resources and the national obsession seems to be to extract these, sell them off and then collectively spray the proceeds up against the wall.

This all happens in the context of Malaysia’s grossly inflated sense of its place in the world.

Most Malaysians are convinced that the eyes of the world are on their country and that their leaders are world figures. This is thanks to Malaysia’s tame media and the bravado of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. The truth is, few people on the streets of London or New York could point to Malaysia on a map much less name its prime minister or capital city.

As if to make this point, a recent episode of The Simpsons features a newsreader trying to announce that a tidal wave had hit some place called Kuala Lumpur. He couldn’t pronounce the city’s name and so made up one, as if no-one cared anyway. But the joke was on the script writers — Kuala Lumpur is inland.

Petronas, the national oil company is well run, particularly when compared to the disaster that passes for a national oil company in neighbouring Indonesia. But in some respects, this is Malaysia’s problem. The very success of Petronas means that it is used to underwrite all manner of excess.

The KLCC development in central Kuala Lumpur is an example. It includes the Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in the world when they were built, which was their point.

It certainly wasn’t that there was an office shortage in Kuala Lumpur — there wasn’t.

Malaysians are very proud of these towers. Goodness knows why. They had little to do with them. The money for them came out of the ground and the engineering was contracted out to South Korean companies.

They don’t even run the shopping centre that’s beneath them. That’s handled by Australia’s Westfield.

This year, a Malaysian astronaut will go into space aboard a Russian rocket — the first Malay in space. And the cost? $RM95 million ($A34.3 million), to be footed by Malaysian taxpayers. The Science and Technology Minister has said that a moon landing in 2020 is the next target, aboard a US flight. There’s no indication of what the Americans will charge for this, assuming there’s even a chance that they will consider it. But what is Malaysia getting by using the space programs of others as a taxi service? There are no obvious technical benefits, but no doubt Malaysians will be told once again, that they are "boleh". The trouble is, they’re not. It’s not their space program.

Back in July, the Government announced that it would spend $RM490 million on a sports complex near the London Olympics site so that Malaysian athletes can train there and "get used to cold weather".

But the summer Olympics are held in the summer.

So what is the complex’s real purpose? The dozens of goodwill missions by ministers and bureaucrats to London to check on the centre’s construction and then on the athletes while they train might provide a clue.

Bank bale outs, a formula one racing track, an entire new capital city — Petronas has paid for them all. It’s been an orgy of nonsense that Malaysia can ill afford.

Why? Because Malaysia’s oil will run out in about 19 years. As it is, Malaysia will become a net oil importer in 2011 — that’s just three years

away.

So it’s in this context that the latest debate about race and wealth is so sad.

It is time to move on, time to prepare the economy for life after oil. But, like Nero fiddling while Rome burned, the Malaysian Government is more interested in stunts like sending a Malaysian into space when Malaysia’s inadequate schools could have done with the cash, and arguing about wealth distribution using transparently ridiculous statistics.

That’s not Malaysia "boleh", that’s Malaysia "bodoh" (stupid).

but, how do you define REMPIT? seriously, what constitutes a person to be a Mat Rempit?

to my understanding, merempit means the act of "press minyak" or "tekan minyak" motor. am i right? but i guess it means more than that now.

is it an attitude?
is it a culture?
is it racial motivated?
is it simply an act of riding a Honda EX5 110cc (or other motorcycles with the same cc)?

let’s face it. unfortunately, we can say almost all (if not all) Mat Rempits are young adrenaline-rush-seeker Malay men, which can vary from the time they are able to ride motorcycles (illegally or not) until the age of 30. or 35. errmm, perhaps there’s no age limit. heck you can be a 45 year old father and still be a Mat Rempit at heart. is it?

i’m not an expert at this. i might be wrong. i did not conduct a proper survey or interviews for this topic, but using my limited observation, i believe that the term "Rempit" is a culture created because of the economic factor. the wealth gap we have in this country, even though not as drastic like other countries especially India, "produce" this culture. from the way i see it, these Mat Rempits ride motorcycles because they can’t afford to buy cars. have you ever seen an anak Datuk wandering around with an EX5? no, he’ll choose an EVO8 or other smooth rides to do that. Mat Rempits prefer "bundles" at night markets because it’s freakin’ cheap. they hang out at shopping complexes because they can’t afford to do other things that fortunate ones are able to do. but when do they do the things they do, we see "Mat Rempits" from a new different angle. it’s an attitude.

they way the society see it is you don’t have to ride a motorcycle to be a Mat Rempit, you can be one by thinking and acting like one. when a young Malay guy harrass a girl at a bus station or somethin’ (trying to get the girl’s number in an improper manner, to Malaysians’ standard), we always associate that with Rempit. some friends i know mentioned that this mentality is closely related to the "kampung background", hence implying Mat Rempits with the words "jakun", "pemikiran kampung", "kecoh", etc. isk isk.

the stereotypes associated with Mat Rempits:

Official ride: Motorcyles under 125cc? or 100cc?
Official activities: Illegal racing, melepak, snooker/pool, karaoke, hanging out outside nightclubs to check out chicks, main game/arcade, carik kasut & seluar bundle, kacau anak dara orang
Official shopping complex/spots: Pertama, Summit USJ, etc
Official music: Rock kapak, Malay songs?
Official accessories: Helmet, usually filled with stickers
Official attire: T-shirt bundle, Jeans bundle, Kasut bundle

Tips/Advices:

i) Choose Practicality over Looks/Exterior.
* With the ever rising fuel prices nowadays, give more priority to fuel efficient cars. The lower the CCs, the better.
* If you’re gonna be stuck in traffic for 3 hours every day, perhaps you should choose Automatic Transmission (AT) than Manual Transmission (MT). But again, it’s entirely up to your preference. Anyways, Manual Transmission (MT) cars will save significantly on fuel.
* If you’re gonna have more than 2 passengers most of the time, choose 5-door cars than 3-door cars like Proton Satria. Don’t go for Proton Satria just because it looked more sporty than Proton Iswara.
* If you’re driving back to kampung every month, choose a higher CC for a smoother and more comfortable ride.
* If you wanna make out in a car, choose a spacious 5-door car. Space would provide you more opportunities to try many positions you can ever imagine of. Perodua Kenari anyone?

ii) Buy Your First Car and Stick To It.
A few years back I tagged along my cousin and his friend to purchase a brand new car somewhere in Wangsa Maju. It appears that my cousin’s friend had just a salary increase a few days back and would like to upgrade his Perodua Kancil to a bigger car. Something that suits his age and new salary range. After considering a few options, he decided to get a brand new Proton Waja, a quite significant change from his first car after graduation, Perodua Kancil.

As a result, he lost so much after the trade in. The value of his Perodua Kancil depreciate so quickly after a few years, that he ended up paying so much more.

When you’re financially stable and you can afford a second car, just go nuts. Buy your dream car. Peugeot. Toyota Harrier. Whatever. Keep your first car after graduation and make it your second. Don’t just change cars when you get a raise. You’ll lose so so much dawg.

iii) Avoid New and Second Hand Continental Cars.
As far as spare parts and maintenance are concerned, we should avoid Continental Cars (European cars) for the obvious reasons. Yeah of course Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Renault, Peugeot (especially Peugeot, nyum nyum) and others looked really good on the road, but trust me you wouldn’t like the price tag of those damn spare parts. Fresh graduates are tempted to buy second hand Continental cars, but I suggest to hold your thought first before you’re financially stable.

iv) Learn A Thing or Two about Cars.
It would help a lot if you personally know some mechanics (close relatives especially), when your car is in trouble, or in need of maintenance. If you don’t know much about engines, you’re putting yourself in a vulnerable position to be lied by sneaky mechanics. They’re just make up some stuff about how you need to change your oil filter or else your engine will over heat and one day it will explode…Uuuuuuuuu.

So date a mechanic. Just kidding.

But if you don’t, well. Things to check: Engine oil, spark plug, steering oil, brake oil/fluid, air filter, oil filter, automatic transmission fluid, battery, wiper, brake lamp, head light.

v) For better mileage, choose SHELL
Honestly, I don’t believe it at first. I had my skeptics alright. So why don’t you try it yourself? When you’re going back to kampung, fill up your tank full with Esso or Mobil or Projet or Caltex or BP or whatever. On the way back, fill up your tank with Shell. You’ll notice the difference. This is not a free advertisement for Shell.

If you ask me, my personal favorite for a national car is Perodua Myvi. In my opinion, this is the VALUE FOR MONEY. And it doesn’t looked too shabby after all. Looked nice really.

Terkejut kopi ais "sepuluh ringgit” di Putrajaya

Saudara Pengarang,
PADA 29 Oktober 2007, saya telah membawa 36 pelajar saya ke Masjid Putrajaya
sebagai program lepasan PMR. Sementara menunggu masuk waktu Asar, saya mencari
tempat minum, maklumlah selalunya waktu itu masa untuk minum petang.

Setelah jumpa tempat yang dicari, iaitu di tingkat bawah sebelah masjid itu,
terdapat banyak gerai atau medan selera yang agak indah menghadap ke tasik.

Saya terus ke gerai yang terpampang namanya iaitu nama yang terdapat di sebuah
bandar atau negeri di Amerika Syarikat. Gerai itu dihias indah dengan susunan
banyak tin kopi dan biji kopi di dalam balang yang belum dihancurkan.

Saya terus membuat pesanan kopi ais kepada dua orang pekerja dan dia tanya saya
sama ada nak tambah perisa atau tidak serta mencadangkan nama-nama perisa
seperti vanila dan bermacam-macam lagi.

Saya terus jawab bubuh sajalah apa-apa perisa dan kerana gerai itu layan diri,
saya terus ambil minuman yang dah siap dan tanya berapa harganya.

Pekerja yang memakai cermin mata itu terus menjawab: "Sepuluh ringgit bang.”

Persoalannya, adakah patut harga kopi tersebut sebanyak itu dan tempatnya bukanlah
di hotel-hotel atau restoran yang besar. Hanya gerai di belakang kawasan
masjid. Adakah pihak berkuasa di situ seperti Perbadanan Putrajaya membenarkan
harga tersebut.

Sebaik saja minuman mahal saya habis, lima orang pelajar saya datang mencari
minuman di situ. Saya terus memberitahu harga kopi tersebut, mereka terus
beredar ke masjid untuk sembahyang Asar. - ORANG KAMPUNG, Kuala Pilah.

SAYA tertarik dengan komen yang diberikan oleh Orang Kampung, Kuala Pilah
tentang rungutan harga kopi ais di Putrajaya. Gerai (taman selera) di belakang
kawasan masjid yang dimaksudkan oleh Orang Kampung (OK) ialah Selera Putra dan
saya dapat agak yang mana satu gerai tempat dia membeli kopi aisnya.

Untuk pengetahuan OK ada bermacam-macam gerai lain di situ termasuklah gerai
mamak yang biasa.

Kenapa memilih gerai yang terpampang nama sebuah bandar atau negeri di AS? Jika
gerainya nampak cantik sudah pasti menuntut kita berbelanja lebih.

Kalau OK melihat gerai mamak di situ, gerainya biasa saja dan harganya pun agak
berpatutan. Gerai-gerai lain juga lebih kurang harganya.

Kita sebagai pengguna berhak memilih. Harga-harga di situ harga yang standard
jika dijual di bandar-bandar besar. Bagi saya, harga minuman segelas kopi ais
di hotel lebih mahal daripada kopi ais yang dibeli oleh OK di situ.

Janganlah salahkan pihak berkuasa kerana membenarkan mereka beroperasi dengan
harga sedemikian. Lihat dulu papan tanda yang telah ditulis harga kopi ais
tersebut. Pilih harga yang kita mampu dan jangan membuta tuli memesan minuman,
kemudian apabila diberitahu harganya terkejut pula.

Saya tidaklah menafikan harga makanan di situ mahal sedikit, tetapi saya
percaya kerana sewa dan kos penyelenggaraan tempat tersebut yang tinggi. Lihat
saja tempatnya yang berhawa dingin, kerusi meja yang disusun dan pemandangan di
kawasan tersebut.

Saya juga berasal dari kampung tapi tidaklah berasa hairan dengan keadaan
tersebut. Kalau nak semuanya murah bawa saja bekal dari kampung.

Saya agak terkilan dengan pendapat OK kerana membeza-bezakan harga kopi ais di
kampung dengan harga kopi ais di Putrajaya.
